Crab Smart Natural is Rich in Omega 3
Omega 3 is a class of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) found in fish and some plant sources that have been studied since their discovery in the 1970s.
The last few years have brought an explosion of information about the healthy properties of these essential fatty acids, or EFAs. (Essential means that they are necessary for life, but not produced by the body, meaning they must be acquired through the diet.)
EPA + DHA
Plant-based sources include flaxseeds and some nuts, but by far the most beneficial Omega 3 PUFAs are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), those found in fatty fish. Scientists have concluded that EPA has a powerful impact on heart health, keeping blood vessel walls soft and supple, while DHA is an essential component of the brain.
DHA in the diet seems to improve mental functioning and combat certain mood disorders. Research has shown that those parts of the world that eat a lot of fish have low incidences of heart disease and Alzheimer’s.
These PUFAs also act as an anti-inflammatory in the body. Inflammation is a source of aging and disease, and plays an important role not only in inflammatory diseases like arthritis, but in creating certain types of cancer as well. Some studies indicate that Omega 3 in the diet can help relieve the symptoms of inflammatory diseases like arthritis, and regular consumption might even help prevent their onset as well.
DAILY VALUE AND RECOMMENDED AMOUNTS
Of all the so-called superfoods that you should be eating for optimum health, Omega 3 fatty acids should be at the top of your list. Many foods are now fortified with Omega 3, some in very small amounts. While the FDA has not set a recommended daily value, scientific bodies like the International Society for the Study of Fats and Lipids, or ISSFAL, that study fatty acids suggest that you should consume an average of 650 mg per day. Crab Smart Natural has over 60% of that amount per serving.
For a great general overview of the role of Omega 3 fatty acids in promoting health, see the University of Maryland Medical Center website: http://www.umm.edu/altmed/articles/omega-3-000316.htm
The Mayo Clinic provides a list of the medical evidence for the health benefits of Omega 3 and gives each on a letter grade from A through F based on how well the scientific evidence supports the claim.
