Vitamin D has made a lot of news recently.  Research has shown that many people who live in the northern part of the United States are deficient in Vitamin D due to lack of adequate sunlight from late autumn through early spring. Vitamin D deficiency is identified with a number of medical concerns, including heart failure, diabetes and certain cancers.

Vitamin D plays a number of important functions in the human body.  These include:

  1. Maintaining proper calcium levels in the blood to develop bones and teeth.
  2. Maintaining proper phosphorus levels in the blood, helping reduce blood pressure in those with hypertension and glucose levels for diabetics.
  3. Maintaining normal cellular growth and function helping prevent cancers.
  4. Maintaining healthy immune function and preventing excessive inflammation for those with rheumatoid arthritis.

The best source of Vitamin D is exposure to sunlight, although during the winter months it is not strong enough to produce Vitamin D in the skin in the northern climates.  The best food source is sockeye salmon. It contains nearly twice as much Vitamin D as Chinook, or king salmon.  Our Smart Salmon has 450 % of the recommended daily value for Vitamin D.  Sockeye have more Vitamin D than other salmon because of their diet. Unlike other salmon they eat zooplankton for their whole life cycle. Zooplankton are both producers of Vitamin D and also take in extra Vitamin D in their diet of phytoplankton as well, so they are a rich source.
